A sump pump is the thing standing between groundwater and your basement floor. It sits in a pit below the slab, and when the water table rises it pumps the water out before it can come up through the concrete.

Groundwater tends to show at the lowest point of the floor, often at a corner or along a wall, during or shortly after heavy rain. It is usually clear rather than anything worse, and it may dry up on its own before you get a chance to look properly — which is why it gets ignored until the year it does not.

A sump pump spends most of its life doing nothing, which is exactly why they fail unnoticed. The one that has not run since last spring is the one that lets you down in April.
Testing it takes two minutes: pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit until the float rises. The pump should start, clear the pit, and shut off cleanly. If it hums without pumping, cycles rapidly on and off, or does not start at all, it needs looking at before the next heavy rain rather than during it.
It is also worth checking the discharge line outside is clear and still directing water away from the foundation. Worth doing every spring, before the melt.
