Under a sink there are only a handful of joints, and each one fails in a recognisable way.
The trap — the U-bend — has slip joints held by plastic nuts that loosen over time or crack if overtightened. The supply lines running up to the tap have compression fittings at both ends. The shut-off valves behind them seize with age, and in older Pickering homes they often will not reseal once turned. And the drain assembly itself seals against the basin with a gasket that hardens and lets water past.
Which one is leaking tells you what the job is, and most of them are small.
The drain assembly is the part that sits in the basin and connects down to the trap. On a bathroom sink it usually includes the pop-up mechanism, which is the first thing to fail — the linkage corrodes or the stopper stops sealing.
Replacing one is straightforward when the sink is accessible and the existing pipework is sound. Where it gets longer is when the tailpiece or trap has corroded onto the fitting, which happens with older metal traps, or when the sink is a vanity unit with limited access underneath.

Most people describe all of it as “the sink”, which is fair enough. In practice it splits three ways.
If the problem is the tap itself — dripping, stiff, weak flow from that tap only — that is faucet work. If it is the basin, the drain assembly, the trap or the connections underneath, that is this page. And if several fixtures are draining slowly at once, or water is coming back up, the problem is in the main line rather than at the sink.
